Lauren Cohan’s new TV pilot Whiskey Cavalier has been given a series order by ABC. The Walking Dead star will be doing double TV duty after also having renewed her AMC contract for the popular zombie drama’s upcoming ninth season.
Whiskey Cavalier is written by Dave Heminsgon, who will also serve as the show’s executive producer alongside Bill Lawrence and Jeff Ingold of Doozer Productions. Meanwhile, Peter Atencio will direct and also executive produce the pilot of the upcoming Warner Bros. Television project. Scott Foley, who has just wrapped up six seasons of Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal opposite Kerry Washington, on the other hand, signed up for the project to join Cohan and will also be one of its producers.
TVLine reports that Whiskey Cavalier - starring Cohan and Foley - had been picked up by ABC following a stream of cancellations by the broadcasting network. will be moving forward at ABC. The show also stars Ana Ortiz, Tyler James Williams, and Vir Das. Furthermore, a synopsis released alongside confirmation that the show is moving forward:
As previously mentioned, Cohan is expected to appear in both Whiskey Cavalier and The Walking Dead, and it’ll be interesting to see how she balances both jobs, especially if her new show takes off. For a time, rumors were rife that she was leaving the AMC series to focus on her latest endeavor, which were only exacerbated following news of The Walking Dead’s pay discrepancy between her and her male co-stars. AMC eventually caved in and the two parties reached an agreement that has the actress returning to reprise the role of Maggie for The Walking Dead season 9, although it’s unclear if she signed for a multi-season deal.
“Whiskey Cavalier follows the adventures of tough but tender FBI super-agent Will Chase (codename: “Whiskey Cavalier”), played by Foley. Following an emotional break-up, Chase is assigned to work with badass CIA operative Francesca “Frankie” Trowbridge (codename: “Fiery Tribune”), played by Cohan. Together, they lead an inter-agency team of flawed, funny and heroic spies who periodically save the world (and each other) while navigating the rocky roads of friendship, romance and office politics.”
Plot details are scant for The Walking Dead’s forthcoming outing as the show just wrapped up its long-running Negan-arc. The final moments of season 8 seem to be setting-up a civil war storyline as Rick and Michonne ultimately decided to let Negan live but hold him as a prisoner. Maggie, who has been motivated to kill Negan after he brutally murdered Glenn in front of him, was understandably upset about the decision. If The Walking Dead goes down a civil war route, then Cohan will obviously be a huge part of the show going forward. Over the last couple of seasons, Maggie has emerged to become one of the strongest characters in the series. She’s taken over the Hilltop community, and if it comes to it, she’ll have her own legion of followers to go up against Rick’s team.
That said, with The Walking Dead’s declining viewership, it’s unclear just how long it will stay on the air. Starring on Whiskey Cavalier, if it’s well-received, will be a good way for Cohan to guarantee her future on TV if AMC decides to wrap-up their zombie-centric offering.
